Tiesto: Club Life

url

Recently in class we learned about podcasts. A podcast is a type of digital media that can contain either audio, video, or pdf and can be subscribed to and downloaded through web syndication or streamed online to a computer or mobile device. One popular way to find, listen, or download podcasts is through Itunes. Many DJs these days use podcasts in order to share their latest music with the world. DJs such as Thomas Gold, Afrojack, and Nicky Romero all have their own podcasts.  One of my all time favorite podcasts is Tiesto Club Life. Tiesto is a well known EDM DJ who uses his podcasts to allow listeners to hear his latest and newest hits. I have about over 300 of Tiesto’s podcasts downloaded on my computer. Unlike the other DJs who also have podcasts Tiesto comes out with a podcast that is around an hour long every Monday. If you own either a Ipod Touch, Ipad, or Iphone listening to Tiestos podcasts can be much more enjoyable because these devices allow you skip through the songs that are within Tiestos podcast rather than having to listen to the entire podcast at once. This way if you like a certain song on the podcast you can easily jump right to it. Tiesto’s podcast is the main reason I am so up to date with the EDM music. Though his podcasts may repeat songs from pervious weeks, majority of them are filled with great songs I’ve never heard before. Not only do I rely on these podcasts to keep me up to date on music I also play them whenever I am through a party. I must say I’m in love with Tiesto’s podcast and I am not to sure what I would do without it. Here is a little version of Tiesto’s podcast I found on Youtube.  Hope you Enjoy..

Valenti Sanjuan

Recently a man named Valenti Sanjuan came to speak to my Journalism 2.0 class. Valenti explained to our class how he is the director and presenter of a show called Vistolovisto. Valenti also created a second show on his called called Etiquetats. Both of these shows use social media networks in order to promote their shows to the public. Valenti started working in the radio industry about 10 years a go, but wanted to do something different and try different ways he could promote radio shows. He then started trying to do things with Twitter, Facebook and Skype because he realized that the world was changing and so was the content. One of the things Valenti talked about that especially stuck out to me was the way his show advertises to viewers. They don’t use regular commercial advertising, but rather advertise brands’ products through simply using them throughout the show. For example, they may use a specific drink brand throughout the course of the show, and then the brand will pay them in return as well as give them free samples to hand out to the audience. I thought this was an extremely interesting way of advertising especially in a radio show, and something I had never heard of before Valenti came to speak to us.

GPS Marketing

3/20/13

With more and more people owning devices that contain GPS technology, marketers are beginning to speculate how this technology can work in their advantages. Marketers can use the information from the GPS technology to reach costumers when they are in range of a certain store. For example, let´s just say you are walking by your favorite department store and all of a sudden you get a text that says ¨”50% off all women blouses”.  Even if you had no intention to even step foot in that store today you are now more likely to be convinced to shop, don´t you think?

Socialight a web and mobile based social media site that allows users to share posts based on where they are located, plans on using this gps technology in an unique way. Since users are posting their interests on this site, Socialight will be able to advertise to users based on what they are intrigued by. This way a person would be less likely to feel they are getting advertised to and more likely to think they are receiving beneficially information. This to me seems like a much better approach on how to use the GPS marketing efficiently. I would not want to receive a text from every retailer I walk pass through out the day. However, I would not mind receiving a text  that says there is a sale from my favorite store, especially if I am near by. I believe this form of marketing may seem annoying to most, but if marketers are smart and figure out the best way to use this new idea, GPS marketing can be extremely successful.

Politics 2.0

Nowadays, social media is being utilized as much more than a form of communicating and keeping in touch with peers. Pretty much ever major corporation has a facebook, twitter, instagram, youtube, and/or pinterst. These corporations are using these social media sites to not only market and promote their business’ to consumers but also as a way to receive feedback and connect with their customers in a more personal way.

Politics is another industry that is starting to incorporate social media into their marketing plan. During the 2012 election every candiate used facebook and twitter in order to post their opinions on certain topics and stay connected to their followers. Having a facebook page or twitter also allows people to interact with the politician in a way they never could have before. Users of these social media sites now have the to ability to respond or post their opinion on the politician’s social media page.

President Obama is a perfect example of a politician who successful used social media as a marketing strategy in his campaign.  President Obama has around 6 million friends on facebook and myspace, and currently has over 30 million followers on twitter. Through the use of social media Obama was able to address individuals’ issues separately.  Obama constantly responded to his followers questions and concerns on twitter. This strategy allowed Obama to connect with voters in a more personal way.The use of social media also allowed President Obama to reach out to generation Y. Majority of this generation spends much more time on social networks than they do watching television. By using social media Obama was allowed to target generation Y efficiently. Social Media has become not only a resource of marketing for corporations but for politicians as well.

Multimedia Storytelling

In class today we learned about multimedia stories.  A multimedia story is combination of text, video, audio, pictures and interactivity that is presented on a website. At first I got a little confused about what exactly a multimedia story was. I figured multimedia stories were exactly what a blog was because a blog also has all the elements of a multimedia story. However, after being shown a couple of examples in class I came to see what the difference was. A multimedia story is nonlinear, which means you must click through links on a website to get the story.  Multimedia stories also allow readers to get as much of the story as they would like. A reader has the option to select which part of the story they would like to read up on or choose not to read about a certain part as well.   An example of a multimedia story that was shown to us in class that really stuck out to me was the one about the Parkersburg tornado. In this multimedia story readers are able to follow the rebuilding process house by house or takeScreen Shot 2013-04-07 at 10.20.19 PM a look at the damage the tornado caused. This mulitmedia story is a map of the town Parkersburg. There are certain parts of the map that are highlighted green, this indicated a property is currently being reconstructed or is finished being reconstructed  When you click on certain houses in the green area, you are able to see the house before and after it was reconstructed. Other properties in the green area contain videos of people in the town helping to rebuild their town. When clicking on a property in a gray area you can see footage of the tornado taken by cellphones when it hit that exact location. I believe this mulitmedia story was a creative, interactive, and effective way of illustrating how the tornado affected the town of Parkersburg.  Reader’s are able to get a much better picture of what the tornado did to Parkersburg through this multimedia than they would if they just read an article.

Differences Between Citizen Journalists and Journalist

Twitter was the first to break the news about plane crashing in NY Hudson River

Twitter was the first to break the news about plane crashing in NY Hudson River

The topic of citizen journalists were brought up in class the other day. A citizen journalist, also known as a street journalist, can be defined as someone who is a normal person (meaning they do not work for a newspaper/magazine) that snaps a picture or publishes daily and analyses  news they just so happen to stubble upon. When first learning about this subject, I was confused about what the exact difference between Citizen Journalism and Journalism actually was.

After a couple of class discussions, I began to see what the differences exactly were. I realized that even though both a citizen journalist and an actual journalists might post a picture onto twitter about a news worthy event that they might of stubbled on, there are still huge differences between the two people. For one, citizen journalists do not get paid. In fact, in order to be a citizen journalist you only need easy tools for reporting such as a camera or a cellphone,  and places to share your news such as blogs or twitters. Most of the time citizen journalists complete information giving to us my journalists. For example users of  twitter were the first to break  the news about US Airways flight that crashed  into New York’s Hudson River on June 2009. Journalists then were able to take this story from citizen journalists and develop and publish a more elaborate and detailed version.. While citizen journalists might be able to find the stories first, journalists still must follow certain ethics and laws in order to publish a story. In my opinion, both citizen journalists and journalists are necessary in order to get the best and most accurate news stories

quora-logo2

2/13/13

Recently I discovered through my Journalism 2.0 class a new social media website called Quora. Based on what I learned from class, I know that Quora is a website that contains a collection of questions and answered created and edited by the people apart of the Quora community. In my opinion Quora is a collaboration between Yahoo Answers and Wikipedia. Right when I heard about this new site I was ecstatic. I google absolutely everything possible, so I knew this website would be perfect for me.  In order to learn more about this new site I created my own personal account.  As soon as you create an account, Quora asks you to choose five topics that interest you. After you pick the your five topics, you are then able to pick subtopics. Quora will then connect you to all your friends who have a Quroa as well. Finally, you will have your very own newsfeed where you can see the questions your friends answered or asked and questions related to the topics of your interest. Overall, I must say I am a huge fan out Quora already. Quora’s resourcefulness and simplicity makes it hard to not instantly fall in love with it.

Facebook Terms and Services

2/6/13

I’m sure we are all very guilty of just clicking you agree with a website terms and services with out actually reading them. I mean who really has time to read through a website’s 10 page legal rights and is it even written inimgres-1 English? Well I decided to actually read Facebook’s Term and services, and wow did I find out a lot of things about the website that I never knew. Facebook actually has permission to take your photos a pretty much do anything they want with them, which is actually really scary. Basically, your photo can be displayed on the side on someones facebook page without you even knowing. Also nothing is really ever deleted on facebook. If your friends tag a photo of you, you can obviously untag yourself, but the actually photo is still on facebook. Which means, if you delete your facebook there can still photos be of you on the actual website. Which makes me wonder, is facebook even private at all?

Blogs 101

1/30/13

Blogs are becoming more and more popular everyday. A blog can be defined as a personal website where users can post headlines on their personal opinions, information, or pretty much whatever they want to talk about, on a daily basis. In April 1997 Dave Winner created a page called “Scripting News” , which was considered the first blog. Nowadays, around 57 million Americans read blogs and around 12 million publish them. There are many reasons different types ways to use a blog. You can use a blog to express you thoughts and opinions towards a certain subject, market or promote yourself or a business, and even stay connected with friends and family. Eventually if your blog is good enough, you can even use it to make money by allowing advertisements to be on your page.
